Guardianship Proceedings
We assist families in obtaining guardianships in New York State Supreme Court and Surrogate’s Court. Specifically, we help families in guardianship proceedings where a loved one is no longer able to provide for his or her own personal needs and make necessary health care and financial decisions. Individuals who may be in need of a guardian include adults with certain illnesses and minor children. We also assist parents of children with developmental disabilities in obtaining guardianships once their children reach the age of majority. We are proficient in preparing guardianship accountings and conducting proceedings pursuant to Article 81 of New York State’s Mental Hygiene Law and Articles 17 and 17-A of New York State’s Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act. We work with families to determine when a guardianship application is warranted and represent guardians following their appointment, to ensure they meet their legal obligations.
